“…A V T also has bccn measured in the cerebral spinal fluid of adult mammals, including man (7,15,17). w e have recently reported RIA systems for measurement of AVP (24) and AVT, using a differential antiserum protocol (21). The present study reports results applying this nlcthod to qualititation of AVP and AVT in early gestational age human fetal pituitary glands and late gestational age ovinc fetal pituitary glands.…”

“…Synthetic AVP ancl AVT a e r c iodinated, using a modification of the method of Hunter ancl Greenwood (24). Assay procedures werc carried out as described earlier (21,23). and bourid ant1 free hormones were scparaterl exclusively by the double antibody nicthod (13).…”

“…Arginine vasotocin (AVT; [8-arginine]-oxytocin), the most ubiquitous neurohypophysial principle in submammalian vertebrates, has been reported in fetal pituitary and pineal glands and/or adult pineal glands of a variety of mammalian species (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). However, the mammalian occurrence of AVT is still not universally accepted (10,11), and AVT has not been reported in mammalian circulation.…”

“…Generally, the two species had similar plasma AVT concentrations (9.4-164·pg·ml -1 ) and most excavated individuals had mean concentrations not significantly different from control individuals. Concentrations were also similar to that of hydrated Rana ridibunda and Bufo marinus (Nouwen and Kühn, 1983;Nouwen and Kühn, 1985;Konno et al, 2005) but higher than hydrated Rana catesbeiana (Rosenbloom and Fisher, 1974;Sawyer and Pang, 1975;Pang, 1977). One cocooned N. aquilonius was found to have much higher AVT concentrations than any other frog (394·pg·ml -1 ).…”

“…The radioimmunoassay for AVT was modified from Rosenbloom and Fisher (Rosenbloom and Fisher, 1974) by Rice (Rice, 1980) and is described in detail elsewhere (Rice, 1982). Briefly, [Arg 8 ]-Vasotocin (Auspep Pty Ltd, Parkville, Victoria, Australia) was radioactively labelled with 125 I (Amersham Biosciences, UK) using the chloramine-T method (Hunter and Greenwood, 1962).…”
