Radioguided Localization of Clinically Occult Breast Lesions (ROLL): A Pilot Study

Abstract: Management of nonpalpable breast lesions requiring pathologic diagnosis has been with wire localization during the last few decades. Recently, radioguided localization (ROLL) became an alternative for this type of lesions. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of this technique in a tertiary referral center in Mexico City. Consecutive patients requiring pathologic diagnosis from a nonpalpable breast lesion were included in the present study. On the same day of operation, all patien… Show more

“…After a learning curve with 40 cases enrolled in a pilot study of radioguided localization of breast lesions at our institution [7], we started an IRB approved, randomized, controlled trial comparing this technique with WL. From April 2005 through December 2006, 100 consecutive women with undiagnosed non-palpable breast lesions were prospectively randomized to radioguided occult lesion localization (ROLL) or WL.…”

“…Since its first description in 1996 at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan [20], this technique has allowed easier, more accurate and more rapid removal of such breast lesions than wire localisation [15,18,[21][22][23][24][25]. We adopted ROLL in our centre in December 2004, and since then we have employed this technique under mammography or ultrasonography guidance in approximately 360 patients [18].…”

“…For the excision of nonpalpable lesions, a preoperative localization by the radiologist is essential. Preoperative localization of breast cancer is typically performed using wire-guided localization (WGL) or using the radioguided occult lesion localization (ROLL) technique (5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12). In WGL, one or multiple wires are placed in or surrounding the lesion to serve as a guiding tool for the surgeon.…”
