Radiographic study of the root canal system of mandibular anterior teeth

Abstract: Summary. Two‐hundred full mouth periapical radiographic surveys from the files of the School of Dental Medicine, Tel Aviv University, were evaluated in order to investigate the number of root canals in mandibular incisors and canines. A total of 1200 mandibular anterior teeth (400 canines, 400 lateral incisors and 400 central incisors) were examined in their orthoradial radiograph and in the radiograph of the adjacent anatomical area in which the teeth were observed from an eccentric angulation. “…This is in agreement with the results of Hessions 10 (11%), Green 11 (13%)and Kaffe et al 12 (13.75%). It is, however, higher than the results of Bellizzi & Hartwell 9 (4.11%) and Ingle et al 3 (6%)while it is lower than the results of Vertucci 1 (22%), Calişkan et al 4 (19.5%) and Sert et al 5 (24%).In Vertucci’s 1 study, 22% of the evaluated mandibular canines had 2 canals, of which 14% were type II, 2% type III and 6% type IV.In the present study, 5% were type II, 7% type III, and none were of type IV (0%).…”

“…1 , 4 , 5 Others have used only radiography. 12 , 14 Hession 10 used radiography following infusion of an opaque material to the studied root canals. In the present study transversal sections were made and then evaluated using a stereomicroscope at high magnification.…”

“…We did not attempt to subdivide the present sample into central and lateral incisors, as some previous studies found no significant difference in anatomy between these groups (5,12,20). The present results showed an average total tooth length of 21.6 (±0.69) mm, which accords with the findings of a previous study (6).…”

“…Several methods are used to investigate root canal morphology, including root sectioning, modeling, radiographic examination, tooth-clearing technique, and CBCT and micro-CT imaging (3,5,(20)(21)(22)(23)(24). Micro-CT and tooth-clearing technique are considered the gold standards for such assessment (13,23).…”

“…Various methods have been used to study root canal morphology including radiographic examination,[2] root sectioning,[4] staining and clearing techniques,[11] direct observation with microscope,[12] sectioning and macroscopic observation,[13] stereo microscope,[14] spiral computed tomography,[15] and cone beam computed tomography. [1617] Vertucci[1] used the clearing technique to study the root canal morphology of extracted mandibular anterior teeth.…”
