Radiographic Features of a Benign Mixed Brenner Tumor and Mucinous Cystadenoma: A Rarely Identified Ovarian Neoplasm on Imaging

Abstract: Imaging features of benign mixed Brenner tumor and mucinous cystadenomas are rarely reported. This report aims to describe the case of a benign mixed Brenner tumor and mucinous cystadenoma with a dominant Brenner tumor component and to review the typical imaging features of this ovarian neoplasm.

“…Consistent with the results of Wilson et al . 7 on radiographic characteristics of a benign combined Brenner tumour and mucinous cystadenoma, the dense fibrous stroma of Brenner’s component of our case appeared hypoechoic with echogenic calcifications; however, no shadowing was observed. Radiographic characteristics of our case showed a smaller mural solid nodule at the periphery of the larger cystic component, consistent with one of the three patterns found by Kato et al .…”

“…Salpingo-oophorectomy (unilateral or bilateral if there is a high suspicion of malignancy) is preferred in women aged 40.0 or older when approaching ovarian tumours with both solid and cystic components 7 , 17 , given that intra-abdominal rupture increases the risk of peritoneal spread and up-staging. However, in our case, the surgeon was able to excise the cyst preserving the right ovary, and the negative CA125 and CEA, along with the benign nature of the tumour on pathology examination and follow-up, did not merit further surgical intervention.…”

“…Įprastai gerybinis Brenerio navikas lokalizuojasi vienoje pusėje, o piktybinis -abipus [2]. Gerybiniai navikai gali būti 5-6 cm skersmens, išskirtiniais atvejais gali siekti 10 cm [7]. Ribinio piktybiškumo ir piktybinių Brenerio navikų diametras gali siekti net iki 30 centimetrų [8].…”

“…Nėra vieno išskirtinio požymio, leidžančio diagnozuoti Brenerio naviką, tačiau tam tikrų požymių kompleksas gali leisti jį įtarti [4]. Kalcifikacijos su šešėliu, menkai vaskuliarizuota solidinė struktūra, matoma kaip hipoechogeninis signalas su šešėliu, dažniausiai kairėje pusėje lokalizuota struktūra, galėtų leisti įtarti gerybinį Brenerio naviką [4,7].…”
