Radiographic and Aerodynamic Measures of Velopharyngeal Anatomy and Function following Furlow Z-Plasty

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that the Furlow double-opposing Z-plasty has several advantages that make it an attractive procedure for cleft palate repair and treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency in selected cases. The anatomic changes associated with this procedure have never been documented prospectively. The purpose of this study was to describe radiographic dimensions of the velopharynx and aerodynamic measures of velopharyngeal function in a group of patients before and after Furlow Z-plasty for the trea… Show more

“…This can potentially increase airway obstruction. The Furlow double opposing Z‐plasty is currently a common technique for closure of the palatal defect and has been shown to both lengthen and thicken the palate 11 . Both of these could lead to increased airway obstruction.…”

“…15,16 The Furlow palatoplasty (FP) is probably the most widely used and is our exclusive choice for palatal lengthening when used for the treatment of VPI. The use of FP alone for the management of VPI in patients with submucous cleft palate and previously repaired cleft palate has been successful at other institutions.…”
