Radiographic abnormalities in carcinoma of the lung as related to histological cell type

Abstract: A detailed study was made of the chest radiographs of 600 patients with bronchogenic carcinoma who had had thoracotomy or intensive radiotherapy. Tumours of the various histological cell types tended to present with different radiographic patterns. Squamous-cell carcinoma was most often characterized by bronchial obstruction, often in association with a hilar mass. Squamous-cell lesions also were far more likely to show cavitation than were lesions of the other cell types. Small-cell carcinoma had a higher per… Show more

“…In our study, 80% of the adenocarcinomas occurred peripherally, but only 45% of the SCCs occurred in a central location. Although the relationship between tumor histology and location may have been straightforward in the mid-twentieth century (43,44), more recent studies have described considerable proportions of SCC in a peripheral location (39-59%; refs. [45][46][47] as well as adenocarcinoma in a central location (41-60%; refs.…”

“…In the Mayo Clinic series, 38% of patients with lung cancer had a hila or peri-hila mass [89]. More recently, 14 of 25 patients (56%) with CT performed for an abnormal hilum were found to have bronchogenic carcinoma [90].…”

“…@-@ At one time adenocarcinomas were not thought to be related to cigarette smoking, but the relationship is now evi dent, except for bronchioloalveolar carci nomas in women. [7][8][9] The bronchioloalveolar type of adeno carcinoma tends to grow along pre existing alveolar walls. It tends to be a slow-growing, low-grade cancer, but it is capricious in its behavior.…”
