“…CO 2 fluxes measured on the ground reached maxima of 19,000 g m −2 d −1 [ Perrier et al , ], a value typically associated with volcanoes [e.g., Granieri et al , ; Carapezza et al , ], while the total CO 2 discharge rate near the main hot springs was estimated to be only 1.0 ± 0.3 t d −1 [ Perrier et al , ]. Radon fluxes measured on the ground reached maxima of 2.0 Bq m −2 s −1 [ Perrier et al , ], an uncommonly large value more typically associated with former uranium mining/milling sites [e.g., Mudd , ; Lavrova and Voitsekhovych , ]. While radon might be a unique asset for temporal monitoring, previous studies have been unsuccessful in establishing a consistent relationship between radon and CO 2 .…”

“…The high est mean 226 Ra ac tiv ity con cen tra tions for the tail ings ponds were around 1300 Bqkg -1 . En vi ron men tal prob lems in con nec tion with remediation pro vi sions in the sur round ings of the for mer ura nium plant in Pridnieprov in Ukraine were stud ied by Lavrov and Voitsekhovych [41], who men tioned 226 Ra and 238 U ac tiv ity con cen tra tions of hun dreds to thousands of Bqkg -1 . Some val ues mea sured in these ar eas are given in tab.…”

“…The upper cover of the CY tailings was installed aiming to physically protect the tailings material from atmospheric precipitations, to mitigate exhalation of 222 Rn and dispersion of the contaminated materials from the tailings surface, but in fact, it cannot efficiently prevent water infiltration within the tailings body. Previous studies of Lavrova and Voitsekhovych [1] showed that poor quality and condition of the upper cover of the CY tailings cannot prevent excessive exhalation of 222 Rn from the tailings body. The lack of the cover stability, percolated by the roots of deciduous trees planted here, provokes infiltration of atmospheric precipitation in the tailings body, which triggers acute downward migration of radionuclides.…”

“…Next drilling companies carried out during 2009 and 2012. The results of studies of this material reported in [1,3,4] allowed to preliminary estimate the vertical profiles of radionuclide distribution in the tailings bodies and consequently to present more accurate radionuclide inventory assessment for the tailings. Physical and chemical speciation of the radionuclides of U/Th series in the tailings materials from this site have also been studied by Protsak and Kashparov [5] and by Marynych et al [6,7].…”
