Radiocarbon and lead-210 age-depth model and trace elements concentration in the Wolbrom fen (S Poland)

Abstract: A one-meter long peat core was taken from the peatland in Wolbrom (Silesian-Cracovian Upland, southern Poland). The analysis of the botanical composition showed that Wolbrom is a fen. Vegetation species such as Carex rostrata and Phragmites australis have been found. An age-depth model was constructed using 12 conventional radiocarbon dates and 13 lead-210 dates from the upper part of the deposit. In this work, the results of radiocarbon dating are presented. According to the model, we can estimate the age of … Show more

“…The up per 20 cm of the cores were also dated by mea sur ing 210 Pb ac tiv ity us ing al pha spec trom e try (Sikorski and Bluszcz, 2008). De tails of prep a ra tion and mea sure ment meth ods for both ra dio car bon and 210 Pb dat ing are de scribed in Pawe³czyk et al (2017). “…This study is part of a larger work, includ ing com par a tive anal y sis of two peatlands in South ern Poland -Otrêbowskie Brzegi and Wolbrom. “…This is probably because the east--west-oriented Wolbrom Gate is well ventilated by the prevailing westerly winds. Accordingly, the heavy metal contents here are not too high (Pawełczyk et al 2017), and for Ni, Cr and Cu generally do not exceed natural background values (Pawełczyk et al 2018). In this peat bog, in contrast to the others in Małopolska and other areas of Europe, mercury reaches its peak concentrations in the 0-1-cm surface layer.…”

“…Palynological and chronostratigraphic studies have shown that peat sedentation lasted from the Older Dryas to modern times here, with a clear break in the Subboreal (Latałowa 1976;Latałowa, Nalepka 1987). The latest radiocarbon datings of the top layer of bog sediments from the W3 profile (Pawełczyk et al 2017(Pawełczyk et al , 2018 show undisturbed peat sedentation in the age range of 5000-150 BC, i.e. from a depth of 105 to 40 cm, whereas the radiocarbon age of the peat samples is ambiguous above 40 cm but, in conjunction with 210 Pb age determinations, indicates a hiatus in AD ~750 to ~1850.…”
