Abstract:Siliceous, opal-A speleothems of the Chimalacatepec lava tube system in central Mexico are characterized here for the first time. Morphologically, they can be classified into cylindrical and planar, and display a wide array of shapes, inner textures, and locations within the lava tube. All speleothems analyzed here are composed of opal-A, and their pores are filled with calcite and monohydrocalcite. Microscopic examination reveals a variety of microbial-looking, silicified filaments and cell casts embedded within the micro lamination of the structures. The abundance of biofilms in the Chimalacatepec lava tube may share similarities with other volcanic caves elsewhere. The direct presence of such bimorphs in the microstructure of the speleothems suggests the biological mediation of these structures. Potential mechanisms include nucleation and sorption of silica on extracellular polymeric substances in the biofilms that, along with the SiO 2 saturation in the water film and evaporative effects, result in the formation of a speleothem. That said, the presence of microbes in these and other cave systems, or their inevitable interactions with the mineral phase of the speleothems, should not be surprising. In view of this, these structures can be most accurately described as biospeleothems. Using Google Earth Surface Metrics to Predict Plant Species Richness in a Complex Landscape

Abstract:Google Earth provides a freely available, global mosaic of high-resolution imagery from different sensors that has become popular in environmental and ecological studies. However, such imagery lacks the near-infrared band often used in studying vegetation, thus its potential for estimating vegetation properties remains unclear. In this study, we assess the potential of Google Earth imagery to describe and predict vegetation attributes. Further, we compare it to the potential of SPOT imagery, which has additional spectral information. We measured basal area, vegetation height, crown cover, density of individuals, and species richness in 60 plots in the oak forests of a complex volcanic landscape in central Mexico. We modelled each vegetation attribute as a function of surface metrics derived from Google Earth and SPOT images, and selected the best-supported linear models from each source. Total species richness was the best-described and predicted variable: the best Google Earth-based model explained nearly as much variation in species richness as its SPOT counterpart (R 2 = 0.44 and 0.51, respectively). However, Google Earth metrics emerged as poor predictors of all remaining vegetation attributes, whilst SPOT metrics showed potential for predicting vegetation height. We conclude that Google Earth imagery can be used to estimate species richness in complex landscapes. As it is freely available, Google Earth can broaden the use of remote sensing by researchers and managers in low-income tropical countries where most biodiversity hotspots are found.

C i e n A ñ o s ResumenLa extraordinaria diversidad magmática de la Faja Volcánica Transmexicana está controlada (directa o indirectamente) por dos placas oceánicas independientes cuyos parámetros geofísicos y composicionales se modifi can constantemente a lo largo de la trinchera, por un régimen tectónico esencialmente distensivo que opera con distinta intensidad sobre la placa continental, por un basamento cortical con diferentes edades, espesores y composiciones, y por una fuente mantélica primaria de composición extremadamente variable que ha sido infl uenciada, en mayor o menor medida, por los agentes químicos derivados de la subducción. El régimen tectónico convergente y, en consecuencia, el arco magmático, tampoco han evolucionado de forma homogénea a lo largo su historia, sino que han mostrado transformaciones notables en su posición, geometría y composición.
