Research carried out by me and my group over the last almost four decades are summarized here. The main emphasis of my work was and continues to be on plant physiology using radiation and radioisotopes. Plants live on water and inorganic elements. In the case of water, we developed neutron imaging methods and produced 15 O-labeled water (half-life 2 min) and applied them to understand water circulation pattern in the plant. In the case of elements, we developed neutron activation analysis methods to analyze a large number of plant tissues to follow element specific distribution. Then, we developed realtime imaging system using conventional radioisotopes for the macroscopic and microscopic observation of element movement. After the accident in Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, we, the academic staff of Graduate School, have been studying agricultural effects of radioactive fallout; the main results are summarized in two books published by Springer.

Various radioisotope imaging techniques have been used at the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Tokyo, to analyze samples containing radiocesium ( 137 Cs and 134 Cs). There are two types of samples: (1) environmental samples contaminated by the fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, which contain relatively low concentrations of radiocesium and (2) laboratory samples from tracer experiments conducted at the radioisotope institution containing relatively high concentrations of 137 Cs. The first technique used to visualize radiocesium in soil and plants was radioluminography (RLG). RLG, which makes use of an imaging plate, has a dynamic range that is large enough to detect both environmental and tracer-added samples. To quantify radiocesium distributions, the samples were frozen and sliced before contact with the imaging plate. This freezing procedure after sampling is for preventing radiocesium movement during slicing and measurement of 137 Cs distribution. After slicing, two detection methods were employed: RLG and microautoradiography (MAR). MAR is the conventional and older method for imaging radioisotopes based on the daguerreotype process. We applied this method to frozen sections and obtained 137 Cs distributions at a higher resolution than with RLG. Following this, we employed a non-destructive method for imaging 137 Cs movement in a living plant. We developed the visualization technique called real-time radioisotope imaging system and then demonstrated 137 Cs movement from soil to rice plants using a chamber containing paddy soil, water, and rice plants. Lastly, 42 K obtained by 42 Ar-42 K generation enabled a comparison between the movement of 137 Cs and 42 K. The mechanism of Cs transport has been reported to have some relationship with the K transport system, so experiments using both 137 Cs and 42 K would be useful for clarifying the mechanism in more detail.

We report the impact of radiocesium released by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident on fruit trees in the vicinity. Specifi cally, we discuss our fi ndings related to the absorption and translocation of radiocesium in peach ( Prunus persica L. Batsch) trees because peaches are a major crop in Fukushima Prefecture.At the time of the nuclear accident, the majority of deciduous fruit tree species had no foliage and had not entered the fl owering stage. This was also the case for peach trees, although we confi rmed at harvest time that radiocesium had migrated to new plant parts. One possible explanation for this is that the presence of radiocesium in the new leaves and fruits, which was not present at the time of the nuclear accident, was affected by direct radiocesium deposition on the existing aboveground plant parts and this may have been absorbed by the tree. In the year of the accident, the root uptake of radiocesium deposited on the soil contributed very little to the overall contamination compared with absorption by the trees through the above-ground plant parts. The magnitude of radiocesium translocation from the old to new plant parts was signifi cantly different between the year of the accident and the year after the accident. We report the fi ndings since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident and speculate the pathways of radiocesium entry and release in peach trees.
