20 24 Americium(III) / Complexation / Monomeric / 25 Polymeric silicic acid / Solvent extraction 26 Summary. The interaction of americium(III) with aqueous 27 silicic acid was studied by competitive solvent extraction with 28 0.1 M thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) as extractant. The aque-29 ous phase contained only 0.2 M NaClO 4 or additionally 0.03 M 30 silicic acid at p[H] 3.0Ϫ3.8 adjusted with perchloric acid. 31 241 Am was used in tracer amounts and its distribution ratio 32 was measured γ-spectrometrically. Silicic acid solutions were 33 prepared by hydrolysis of tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS). 34 Kinetic investigations with the molybdate reaction showed 35 polymeric silica fractions between 10Ϫ17% within the p[H] 36 range investigated. Extraction times of about 1.5 hours were 37 taken to assure distribution equilibrium for the 241 Am extrac-38 tion. The occurrence of a 1 :1 complex of americium with 39 silicic acid according to the reaction Am 3ϩ ϩ Si(OH) 4 < 40 AmOSi(OH) 3 2ϩ ϩ H ϩ could be demonstrated and a formation 41 constant of K 1 ϭ (6.9 Ϯ 0.7) ϫ 10 Ϫ3 [log K 1 ϭ Ϫ2.16 Ϯ 0.04] 42 at I ϭ 0.2 M was calculated.43
