Radio-sensitivity test of gamma irradiation of local chilli pepper seeds (Capsicum annum L.)

Abstract: Chilli pepper is a strategic horticultural commodity for its economic, nutritional, and medicinal values and is used as a spice in a variety of cuisines all over the world. Induced mutation by gamma ray’s irradiation has been used to increase chilli resistance and quality. The objective of this study was to determine the optimum dose of gamma irradiation in inducing resistance in putative mutation(M1) on chilli pepper seeds. The seeds induced were infected by Pepper Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (PYLCV) and were irra… Show more

“…The effect seen in the results of the study shows that there is a positive influence and a negative influence. The positive effect is due to a stimulatory effect that occurs due to higher hormone activation (Warade et al, 2022), while the negative effect is caused by plant cell damage that causes abnormal organ growth (Tarigan et al, 2021). The effect of mutations on plant morphology can occur in plant leaf areas.…”

“…The LD50 value is obtained from the results of the quadratic equation y = -0.126x + 76.9 then the LD50 value is searched so that the LD50 value is 213.49 Gy. On research (Tarigan et al, 2021), radiosensitivity in local chili ranges from 288.269 Gy. This LD50 value indicates that at a mortality rate of 50%, physiological damage is expected to be balanced with the genetic changes acquired (Hong et al, 2022).…”

“…Breeding is directed to obtain the best chili. The best characteristics of chili are the characteristics that support high yields and excellent fruit quality (Tarigan et al, 2021). The diversity of shapes and colors of ornamental chili plants causes the importance of characterization activities.…”

“…Capsaicin is an active component of chili peppers, causing a burning sensation on the tongue or skin, often used in food industry to increase the spiciness [4][5][6]. In Indonesia, the pepper production does not meet the need of national demand [7,8]. They consumed 1.57 kg/capita in 2018 and increased to 1.58 kg/capita in 2019 with the increasing population from 264,161.6 to 266,911.9 people in a year (2018-2019) and unfortunately it decreased in production from 1.18 million tons to 1.12 million tons, led to pepper Yellow Leaf Curl Virus disease caused by Begomovirus is a serious problem to chili plantation, resulting in lower production.…”
