Cabai merah (Capsicum annuum) merupakan tanaman hortikultura yang banyak dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan tambahan pangan yang memberikan rasa pedas khas dan memberi warna pada makanan. Menurunnya penggunaan varietas local cabai merah dalam jangka panjang dapat menyebabkan keberadaan plasma nutfah lokal semakin menurun hingga terancam punah, sehingga diperlukan upaya untuk meningkatkan produktivitas dan mutu varietas lokal agar varietas lokal kembali diminati oleh masyarakat. petani. Salah satu upaya yang dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan produktivitas dan kualitas tanaman cabai mentah varietas lokal adalah dengan mutasi genetik menggunakan sinar gamma. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh iradiasi sinar gamma terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil cabai merah varietas Tanjung-2. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat pengaruh iradiasi sinar gamma terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman cabai merah varietas Tanjung-2. Berdasarkan pengamatan, tumbuhan kode 50.12 merupakan tumbuhan mutan tertinggi dengan tinggi 56,5 cm. Selain itu dari segi hasil, kode 150.2 mempunyai jumlah buah dan berat buah terbanyak dibandingkan seluruh tanaman sampel. Selain itu tanaman dengan perlakuan 350 Gy dapat menghasilkan cabai merah yang memiliki kadar capsaicin lebih tinggi dibandingkan tanaman tanpa perlakuan sinar gamma (0 Gy).

Chili is used not only as a vegetable for consumption or a complement to dishes but also as an attractive ornamental plant to cultivate. One of the genetic enhancement efforts is through mutation induction with gamma rays. The aim of this study was to increase the genetic diversity of ornamental chilies by inducing gamma ray mutations. This research was conducted at BATAN (National Nuclear Energy Agency), experimental field and Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Jenderal Soedirman University. The research was conducted from July to November 2022. The results showed that the LD50 value of gamma-ray irradiated chili seeds was 213.49 Gy, and there was an increase in the diversity of ornamental chili mutants. The color characteristic of mature leaves was purplish-green in the control plant, while the mutant turned purple on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. The character of the flower has not changed; that is, it remains purple, and the flower stalk remains upright. The stem pigment in control plants was a purple-green line, changed to purple in mutants. Mutant plant habitus changed to compact. These characters increase the aesthetic value of the ornamental chili mutant.

Plant mutation breeding plays a pivotal role in increasing plant genetic variability, pest and disease resistance and yield production. Gamma ray irradiation induced to infected plants to obtain resistant mutant plants. This research aims to examine the morphological characterization of pepper plants and the mutant plants produced from irradiated PepYLCV-infecting local pepper from Karo Regency, Sumatra Utara, Indonesia. The research was conducted in January to October 2021 in farming land in Tongkoh Village, Dolat Rayat District, Karo Regency, Sumatra Utara, using non-Factorial Randomized Block Design. The mutation was induced by exposing the seeds of local chili to varied doses (D): 0 (uninfected seeds and unirradiated infected seeds), 150, 200 and 250 Gy and was performed using T-Test, replicated 3 times. The results of research showed that different doses of gamma rays significantly affected the mutant plants from the observation on its plant height, stem diameter, canopy and fruit lengths, fruit weight, number of branches, leaves and fruits. Plant induced with gamma ray 150 Gy found to have the longest canopy and fruit and also demonstrated the highest number of branches, flowers, leaves and the highest fruit weight compared to other higher doses. The exposure of gamma irradiation gave positive effect to infected chili to enhance their resistance in order to produce higher yield.
