Dynamic spectrum access is a maturing technology that allows next generation wireless devices to make highly efficient use of wireless spectrum. Spectrum can be allocated on an on-demand basis for a given geographic location, time duration and frequency range. However, a major obstacle to adoption remains. There are no effective solutions to protect licensed users from spectrum misuse, where users transmit without properly licensing spectrum, and in doing so, interfere and disrupt legitimate flows to whom the spectrum is assigned. Given the flexibility of today's cognitive radios, an application can easily transmit on frequencies outside of its allocated range, either accidentally due to misconfiguration, or intentionally to avoid spectrum licensing costs. In this paper, we propose a system to secure dynamic spectrum transmissions, where authorized users embed secure spectrum permits into data transmissions, thus enabling patrolling trusted devices to detect devices transmitting without authorization. We focus our attention on the development of spectrum permits, and describe Gelato, a spectrum misuse detection system that minimizes both hardware costs and performance overhead on legitimate data transmissions.

Communication through wireless medium is widely used in today's world. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a multiplexing method in which data transmission is done over the equally spaced, overlapped carrier frequencies. Transmission of data through OFDM has the advantage that it can achieve high data rate with greater bandwidth and flexible underlying modulations. It can easily eliminate intersymbol interference (ISI). Therefore OFDM has become a leading choice for data transmission. .So it becomes important to secure data that is transferred through wireless OFDM communication systems. Different techniques have been used for secure data transmission like cryptography, watermarking etc. In this paper, literature studies of various techniques are discussed. Enhanced security using steganography is proposed.

It was shown that most of the radio frequency spectrum was inefficiently utilized. To fully use these spectrums, cognitive radio networks have been proposed. The idea is to allow secondary users to use a spectrum if the primary user (i.e., the legitimate owner of the spectrum) is not using it. To achieve this, secondary users should constantly monitor the usage of the spectrum to avoid interference with the primary user. However, achieving a trustworthy monitoring is not easy. A malicious secondary user who wants to gain an unfair use of a spectrum can emulate the primary user, and can thus trick the other secondary users into believing that the primary user is using the spectrum when it is not. This attack is called the Primary User Emulation (PUE) attack. To prevent this attack, there should be a way to authenticate primary users' spectrum usage.We propose a method that allows primary users to add a cryptographic link signature to its signal so the spectrum usage by primary users can be authenticated. This signature is added to the signal in a transparent way, such that the receivers (who do not care about the signature) still function as usual, while the cognitive radio receivers can retrieve the signature from the signal. We describe two schemes to add a signature, one using modulation, and the other using coding. We have analyzed the performance of both schemes.
