Over the past three decades, several man-made vehicles have being sent into space to explore the extra-terrestrial bodies. As the search for water and other useful substances in the extra-terrestrial surfaces increases, this exploration activity is set to dramatically increase over the next decade (2020); with NASA planning to explore the surface of Mars, Moon and other planets and satellites. In this regard, it is imperative to build an extremely energy-efficient communication system that will cover a large area in the range of hundreds of kilometres which unfortunately is absolutely not possible today. A two-hop communication mechanism that has been well researched in the literature is insufficient to cover the extremely large distance of extraterrestrial surface. In this paper, a novel three-hop clusterbased hierarchical communication architecture is proposed which could be easily extended to higher number of hops. In particular, it allows the individual rovers to move large distances for collecting data and at the same time provide an extremely energy-efficient mechanism for continuously exploring the surfaces. The simulation results show that in a Martian surface, the proposed three-hop design results in a higher capacity as compared to a single-hop or a clusterbased two-hop design even when the rovers move 100 km.

Swarm exploration by multi-agent systems relies on stable inter-agent communication. However, so far both exploration and communication have been mainly considered separately despite their strong inter-dependency in such systems. In this paper, we present the first steps towards a framework that unifies both of these realms by a “tight” integration. We propose to make exploration “communication-aware” and communication “exploration-aware” by using tools of probabilistic learning and semantic communication, thus enabling the coordination of knowledge and action in multi-agent systems. We anticipate that by a “tight” integration of the communication chain, the exploration strategy will balance the inference objective of the swarm with exploration-tailored, i.e., semantic, inter-agent communication. Thus, by such a semantic communication design, communication efficiency in terms of latency, required data rate, energy, and complexity may be improved. With this in mind, the research proposed in this work addresses challenges in the development of future distributed sensing and data processing platforms—sensor networks or mobile robotic swarms consisting of multiple agents—that can collect, communicate, and process spatially distributed sensor data.

In order to study lunar regolith properties, wireless sensor network is planned to be deployed on surface of the Moon. This network can be deployed having few wireless sensor nodes capable of measuring soil properties and communicating results, as and when ready. Communication scenario on lunar surface is quite different as compared to that on the Earth, as there is no atmosphere and also there are lots of craters as well as various terrain topologies. Since the deployment of sensors on the Moon is a challenging and difficult task, it is advisable to predict the behaviour of communication channel on lunar surface. However, communication models like Irregular Terrain Model used for terrestrial communication networks are not directly applicable for Unattended Ground Sensor type sensor networks and need modifications according to lunar surface conditions and lunar environment. Efforts have been put to devise a model of radio frequency environment on the Moon using basic equations governing various physical phenomena occurring during radio propagation. The model uses Digital Elevation Model of four sites of the Moon, measured by Terrain Mapping Camera on board Chandrayan-1, a recent Indian mission to the Moon. Results presented in this paper can provide understanding of percentage area coverage for given minimum received signal strength, potential sites for sensor deployment assuring wireless communication, decision whether a given sensor node can work and can provide suggestion for possible path of rover with cluster head to remain in contact with the nodes. Digital Elevation Model based results presented here can provide more insight in to the communication scenario on the Moon and can be very useful to mission planners.
