Radical innovation in Marshallian industrial districts

Abstract: Radical innovation is under-researched in the geography of innovation strand and, it is very noticeably missing in that of industrial districts. In this paper, the focus is on understanding how radical innovations occur in Marshallian industrial districts (MIDs), a phenomenon mostly overlooked by scholars. This study theorizes upon industrial districts as a distinct socio-economic innovation system mostly based on incremental innovation and challenges this assumption. Using exploratory and in-depth longitudina… Show more

“…This innovative capacity is achieved thanks to a complete local supply chain with a strong capacity for interaction between the players who are part of it, from large companies to niche ones. The propensity for innovation of the Italian ceramic industry has made this sector a world reference in terms of technologies (plants and machinery), materials (glazes and inks for decoration, adhesives and additives for laying ceramic tiles) and design (Italian excellence fashion) [55].…”

“…Despite this major dominant trend, previous research offers some cases that may be considered as counterexamples as they show how disruptive technologies have been successfully introduced in clusters thanks to disruptive exploration and exploitation activities (i.e., the work by the authors of [43]). Besides, the ability of clusters to generate or adapt disruptive innovations has been recently addressed by different authors even though in a marginal way [5,[44][45][46].…”

“…This table contains all possible logical combinations, which in our configuration of variables totals 32. This figure is obtained through the mathematical operation 2 5 , where the superscript 5 corresponds to the number of conditions considered in our analysis. After identifying all combinations, a process of categorization is performed [90].…”

“…For better or worse Ð some heavily criticised the role of the anchor tenants Ð most members kept viewing the current anchor tenants, especially the research lab, as the gatekeepers to get grants from the government. The anchor tenants have the complementary assets (Herv ‡s- Oliver et al, 2017), such as the intellectual, human, and social capital to help in obtaining such funding.…”
