Radical cystectomy in octogenarians

Abstract: This retrospective study evaluates the morbidity and outcome of cystectomy and urinary diversion in octogenarians with invasive bladder cancer. Records of all patients older than 80 years who underwent cystectomy during the last 10 years were analyzed retrospectively. Among 565 cystectomies, 11(< 2%) patients were identified and evaluated for intraoperative and postoperative complications and mortality post surgery. The median age was 82 years. One female and ten male patients were selected. Eight patients wer… Show more

“…In a more recent SEER analysis, 18.9% of patients with MIBC underwent RC (29). For patients with more than 80 years old, only 6.9% underwent RC (30). Older age, Charlson Comorbidity Index >2, and ethnicity (non-Hispanic black patients) were factors related to decreased odds of receiving RC (28,29).…”

“…Chronological age, per se, is not a contraindication for RC. There is a good body of literature to support that RC can be performed safely in the elderly (30)(31)(32). On the other hand, several studies advocate that increasing age is associated with both mortality and complications after RC (33)(34)(35).…”

“…Wound healing includes different processes such as epithelialization formation, contraction, and fibrosis. The healing process is largely dependent on the biosynthesis, accumulation, and subsequent maturation of new collagens [57] . Granulation tissue contains collagen fibers, fibroblasts, fibrocyte, edema, and newly formed blood vessels [58] .…”

“…The healing process is largely dependent on the biosynthesis, accumulation, and subsequent maturation of new collagens. [57] Granulation tissue contains collagen fibers, fibroblasts, fibrocyte, edema, and newly formed blood vessels. [58] In the histopathological evaluation, granulation tissue formation with prominent fibrocyte, collagen and angiogenesis were detected in groups treated with 0.5 g/day (group-3) and 1 g/day (group-4) A. sintenisii extract (Figure 3).…”
