Radiation resistant innovative 3D pixel sensors for the CMS upgrade at the High Luminosity LHC

Abstract: An extensive R&D program aiming at radiation hard, small pitch, 3D pixel sensors has been put in place between Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN, Italy) and FBK Foundry (Trento, Italy). The CMS experiment is supporting the R&D in the scope of the Inner Tracker upgrade for the High Luminosity phase of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). In the HL-LHC the Inner Tracker will have to withstand an integrated fluence up to 2.3 × 10 16 n eq /cm 2. A small number of 3D sensors were interconnected with t… Show more

“…The measurements presented in this paper have been performed in the DESY II test beam facility [21] using an electron beam with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV, a constant absolute momentum spread of σ p = (158±6) MeV over the full momentum range and divergence d α = 1 mrad. The EUDET-type beam telescope [22] available at the facility has a remarkable track resolution that allows measurements of the spatial resolution along the 25 µm pitch of non-irradiated sensors [5,23]. When measuring the resolution of irradiated sensors, the material in the beam increases due to the additional cooling equipment.…”

“…A hit efficiency > 99% after 2×10 16 n eq /cm 2 has been demonstrated. On the other hand, the first layer of the barrel will be equipped with 3D pixel sensors [7,8] because of the lower high voltage power consumption and good hit resolution up to 1 × 10 16 n eq /cm 2 . At the moment of writing data analysis on the first beam test involving the C-ROC paired to the full final geometry sensors, performed in April/May 2022, is ongoing.…”

“…The signals from an array of holes are collected by an external electrode (strip). The 3D micro-strips [8] are conceived to better sustain the huge radiation damage of the high luminosity large hadron collider (LHC).…”
