Radiation-Induced Stable Radicals in Calcium Phosphates: Results of Multifrequency EPR, EDNMR, ESEEM, and ENDOR Studies

Abstract: This article presents the results of a study of radiation-induced defects in various synthetic calcium phosphate (CP) powder materials (hydroxyapatite—HA and octacalcium phosphate—OCP) by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy at the X, Q, and W-bands (9, 34, 95 GHz for the microwave frequencies, respectively). Currently, CP materials are widely used in orthopedics and dentistry owing to their high biocompatibility and physico-chemical similarity with human hard tissue. It is shown that in addition… Show more

“…PCs are atoms, ions, or free radicals (the case for our article) that have their magnetic moment due to the spin (S) or orbital (L) contribution. The main condition of EPR absorption is determined by the expression [ 30 ]: where h is Planck’s constant, ν is the microwave frequency, β is the Boron magneton, g is the spectroscopic splitting factor, and B 0 is the value of the induction of the magnetic field. The magnetic field is necessary to cause the quantization of PCs along the B 0 force lines.…”

“…Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is known as one of the analytical, nondestructive methods for determining the type and concentration of paramagnetic impurities in liquids and solids including HAp [16]. To calculate the concentration, the integral signal Crystals 2021, 11, 1050 2 of 7 intensity should be known [17].…”
