Radiation-induced bystander effect in large Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus) embryonic cells

Abstract: Although evidence suggests that ionizing radiation can induce the bystander effect (radiation-induced bystander effect: RIBE) in cultured cells or mouse models, it is unclear whether the effect occurs in cells of wild animals. We investigated medium-mediated bystander micronucleus (MN) formation and DNA damage in un-irradiated cells from a large Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus). We isolated four clones of A. speciosus embryonic fibroblasts (A603-1, A603-2, A603-3, and A603-4) derived from the same mot… Show more

“…Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, large amounts of radioactive substances, particularly volatile elements, such as radioactive iodine, caesium and tellurium, were released into the environment. The ex‐evacuation zone comprises a 20‐km‐radius area around the FDNPP, from which we have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals (Ariyoshi et al., 2018; Fukuda et al., 2013; Fukuda et al., 2015; Fukuda et al., 2016; Koarai et al., 2016; Koarai et al., 2018; Koarai et al, 2020; Ohdaira et al., 2019; Suzuki et al, 2020; Takahashi et al., 2015; Takino et al., 2017; Urushihara et al., 2016; Meguro et al., 2019; Urushihara et al., 2018; Yamashiro et al., 2013; Yamashiro et al., 2014; Yamashiro et al., 2015).…”

“…Although wild large Japanese field mice have been used as animal models in a variety of research fields (Ariyoshi et al, ; Suzuki et al, ; Takino et al, ), they have not been used in reproductive biology and assisted reproductive technologies because a large supply of oocytes is needed.…”

“…This karyotypic alternation in A. speciosus was caused by a Robertsonian translocation [10]. In recent years, A. speciosus has been used as animals to monitor the effects of radiation from nuclear power plant accidents [1].…”
