“…The reports by Alaparthi et al suggest that irrespective of the method of preparation and nature (bulk vis-à-vis nano particle), the Eu ions occupy non centro-symmetric sites in the LZO host [41,42]. This was also suggested by Hu et al [43] and Widden-Wright et al [44]. Since, La 3 þ and Gd 3 þ have comparable ionic charge and radius, it can be very well assumed that, on doping with 'Gd' ions, they can readily replace the 'La' ions in the LZO host.…”

“…In addition, these materials have also been used to insulate vulnerable mechanical components from extreme temperatures because of their high thermal expansion coefficient, high melting point and low thermal conductivity [15,16]. One such material La 2 Zr 2 O 7 (lanthanum zirconate=LZO) has been extensively studied for the above mentioned properties.…”

“…Within this context, there has been much work towards studying the effects of ionizing radiation on A 2 B 2 O 7 materials and then investigating their properties such as structural, nuclear, and radiation tolerance, etc. Many previously reported works have studied the effect of gamma irradiation on pyrochlores, such as Er 2 Ti 2 O 7 pyrochlore irradiated with 400 KeV Ne 2+ ion [28,29], RE 2 Ti 2 O 7 (RE = Yb, Er, Y, Gd and Sm) irradiated with 2.2 GeV 197 Au [30], Lu 2 Ti 2 O 7 irradiated with various types of ionizing radiations such as Ne, Ar and Xe [31], La 2 Zr 2 O 7 irradiated with X-rays and protons [32], Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 and Gd 2 Hf 2 O 7 irradiated with 1 MeV Kr + [33], Gd 2 Hf 2 O 7 and Gd 2 Ti 2 O 7 irradiated with 400 KeV Ne + [34], and tantalate pyrochlore irradiated with 1 MeV Kr + [35]. Currently, there are few studies outlining the relationship of irradiation and radiation induced amorphization of these A 2 B 2 O 7 materials.…”
