Radiation effects on fused biconical taper wavelength division multiplexers

Abstract: The effects of radiation on fused biconical taper wavclcnglh division multiplexcrs arc presented, A theoretical model indicates ~hat index changes in the fiber are primarily responsible for the degradation of these devices.

“…Conventional wavelength-flattened COTS fiber-optic couplers [35], [36] can be used to multiplex in one fiber the optical signals, encoding the sensing information and going to the control room. Their radiation resistance has been demonstrated up to MGy dose levels [37], [38]. Higher dose radiation resistance can be expected from our in-reactor irradiation of single-mode optical fibers.…”

“…As the mode field diameter approaches the diameter of the cladding, the cores of the fibers are no longer guiding the light, and the cladding becomes the guiding structure. Since the taper slope is below the Stewart-Love limit [17,24] , only the first two fundamental modes of the cladding-air waveguide are excited in the region between the tapers. The two modes (symmetric mode and antisymmetric mode) are shown in Fig.2.…”

“…Radiation induced colour centres and defects in glass materials have been investigated for almost 50 years. Other phenomena which have been studied, albeit to a much lesser extent, include radiation induced luminescence and radiation induced refractive index changes in glass [1,2]. The latter are nevertheless important as they may alter the wave guiding properties of optical fibres and therefore influence the design and the reliability of fibre based instruments such as optical fibre sensors for nuclear industry or for space applications, fibre-optic spacecraft gyroscopes, high speed intra-satellite links, space LIDARs and others.…”
