Radiant ignition studies of ammonium perchlorate based propellants

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of ammonium perchlorate (AP) based propellant ignitability. A CO 2 laser provided the radiant energy source. Neat AP ignition was performed on both production grade and high purity AP. The material was di©cult to ignite under the conditions. Five nonmetallized and sixteen metallized AP based formulations were used to examine the e¨ects of particle size, binder type, additives, and coarse-to-¦ne ratio (C/F) on propellant ignitability.

“…A set of equations (1-2) with initial and boundary conditions (3)(4)(5)(6) was solved numerically by using an explicit finite difference scheme for three different values of the absorption coefficient of the mixture μ (μ = 1000; 3700; 10,000 cm À 1 ). An approximate value of μ = 3700 cm À 1 was obtained in [18].…”

“…Ammonium perchlorate (AP) and aluminum powders are widely used in solid rocket propulsion [1][2][3][4]. A two-component AP/Al mixture is the energetic material capable of combustion and explosion under certain conditions [5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…Solid propellant charges are prone to burning or exploding under unexpected thermal stimulation, leading to catastrophic accidents [1,2]. Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is the most abundant ingredient in solid composite propellants and is widely used in solid propellant engines and aerospace boosters, where the AP content is over 70% [3,4]. AP has many advantages, including an ideal density, a favorable oxygen balance, and tailorable burn rates.…”

“…Cain [6] studied the relationship between AP/HTPB propellant ignition characteristics and the optical properties through the radiation ignition experiment. Atwood [7] used CO 2 laser to study the ignition characteristics of AP composite propellant under different pressure and heat flux. The effects of pressure and heat flux on the time of first light (FL) and go/no-go (GNG) were obtained.…”
