“…Dynamic weight-bearing was assessed with a force platform, which provides an objective and sensitive measurement of limb loading during motion in dogs [ 60 , 61 ]. It is currently the reference standard for evaluating treatment outcome in dogs with various orthopedic and neurological conditions [ 62 64 ]. The determination of a symmetry index is a method to evaluate the balance in dynamic limb loading based on right to left comparisons rather than absolute values of the measured forces, which are subject to effects of absolute and relative dog velocity and acceleration [ 61 , 65 ].…”

“…The acoustic wave can be generated by kinetic energy as a result of a ballistic collision between two masses where the created energy can generate a shockwave that may be directed to biological tissue illicit a tissue treatment. The treatment capabilities of acoustic pressure pulses have been widely reported and is known to produce various responses in biological tissues, such as angiogenesis and anti-inflammatory effects [ 18 ], endorses the healing process in musculoskeletal diseases in humans [ 19 ], race horses [ 20 ] and dogs [ 21 ]. In humans, acoustic pressure pulses are also used to treat orthopedic inflammatory disorders [ 22 , 23 ], heart ischemia treatment [ 24 , 25 ] erectile dysfunction treatment [ 26 , 27 ].…”

“…In Race horses, low power APT improved lameness disorders such as insertional desmopathies, tendinopathy, osteoarthritis myopathies, arthrosis and podotrochlosis syndrome [ 19 , 20 ]. In dogs, APT was used for shoulder lameness, degenerative joint disease (DJD of the hip, elbow, knee, wrist, and ankle), Legg Calve Perthes disease (degeneration of the head of the femur bone in the hind leg) osteoarthritis and spondylosis (degeneration of joints in the spine) [ 21 ].…”

“…No involvement of the obturator nerve articular branches in the innervation of the HJC was determined in the dog by Kinzel et al [ 12 ]. However, Gasse et al [ 9 ], using acetylcholine esterase staining, detected contributions of obturator nerve branches to the innervation of the caudal part of the HJC in the dog. The latter observation was confirmed by recent studies [ 36 ] describing short articular nerve fibres arising from the obturator nerve and supplying the caudal aspect of the HJC.…”

“…For the patient, this means a significant improvement in the quality of life and more importantly, significant slowing of the atrophy of pelvic limb muscles [ 5 – 7 ]. Hip joint pain reduction can also be achieved using shockwave therapy [ 8 ; 9 ], caloric restriction [ 10 ; 11 ], physical activity control [ 12 ], physiotherapy [ 13 ; 14 ] non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs [ 15 ], or surgically. But long-term drug therapy carries a risk of side effects in the gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys [ 16 ].…”
