Radial propagation of Type-I ELMs on JET

Abstract: The propagation of edge localized modes (ELMs) towards the main chamber could lead to potentially serious consequences in ITER (Federici G et al 2001 Nucl. Fusion 41 1967. This effect was studied in JET by examining the interaction of a large sample (>200) of Type-I ELMs with an array of Langmuir probes on the outboard limiter. High clearance discharges were used with a separatrix to wall distance of 8-18 cm. The average ELM duration was measured as ∼200 ± 50 µs, the average radial propagation velocity of the… Show more

“…Data from both JET 95,293 and DIII-D 273,294 is consistent with the picture that ELM filaments are ejected mostly on the low field side, thereby launching a sound wave or perhaps a sonic front that propagates along the field lines. However, at low densities, this picture is apparently not so clear.…”

“…4.2.2.2.1. The observed ELM radial propagation velocities are of a size compatible with those expected from a model for the propagation of "blobs" [195,196] in the SOL [194,83] [31]. [187].…”

“…Measurements of power flux to PFCs in the main chamber and of the electron temperature and density in the far SOL during ELMs [188,83,194,197] are consistent with the energy flux onto main chamber PFCs being associated with the convective radial transport of ion energy. Pedestal ions reaching first wall surfaces do not appear to lose much of their energy either to electrons or to the divertor target [194,188].…”
