Radial Drilling Revitalizes Aging Field in Tarim: A Case Study

Abstract: Upward trends in oil prices and the proliferation of new technology enable operators to capitalize on new opportunities. This trend is not limited to previously undeveloped fields or by lithology. Operators are also able to gain higher recovery from old fields where production has declined over time, making new opportunities for matching technology to economies of scale for such marginal projects. This paper outlines the recompletion of an old field using radial jet drilling, RJD. The reservoir in K-block, Tar… Show more

“…Modern RLW are created by radial jet drilling (RJD) starting from a cased hole [21][22][23]. The productivity of RLW has been studied by many investigators, including Liu et al [24], Lu et al [25], Jain et al [26], and Maut et al [27]. Based on Furui et al's [28] model for horizontal wells, Guo et al [29] developed a mathematical model for predicting the productivity of RLW, considering the interactions between radial laterals.…”

“…Such a model is highly desired for predicting CO 2 injectivity into marine hydrate reservoirs and low-temperature aquifers for project feasibility analysis. et al [25], Jain et al [26], and Maut et al [27]. “…The early versions of RLW's were short-radius multi-lateral wells [1,7]. A number of benefits from field application of RWLs have been reported in the literature [8][9][10][11][12]. In the specific case of Lu et al [9] a 300% increase in production was reported when RJD was applied to recomplete an old field in Tarim in China.…”

In the specific case of Lu et al [9] a 300% increase in production was reported when RJD was applied to recomplete an old field in Tarim in China. The results presented by Ashena et al [12] showed limited success-only a 50% increase in production was realized.…”
