Radial Artery Pseudoaneurysm

Abstract: A radial artery pseudoaneurysm represents a rare, potentially catastrophic complication of arterial cannulation that has been reported after cardiac catheterization. Treatment options are limited to chemical, mechanical, and combined approaches to obliterate the radial artery pseudoaneurysm and tract. Manual compression protocols using the TR Band (Terumo Medical Corporation, Somerset, NJ) have been variable and anecdotal, without objective measurements of adequate compression, making this technique prone to f… Show more

“…6 Pain and swelling along with the radial access site are considered the one of the manifestations of pseudoaneurysm which later confirmed by Doppler ultrasound examination. 7,8 Herein, this report indicated our experience with one case of pseudoaneurysm development after cardiac catheterization in accordance with a literature review of the existed case reports.…”

“…Because of the time and staff commitments with the aforementioned transducer probe approach, a more practical approach is ideal. A unique strategy of utilizing a Terumo band (TR Band ® ) to apply consistent radial compression has been utilized successfully in a few case studies [9, 10]. This approach is highly replicable, requires less staffing and time than other procedures, is based upon literature review, and has been successful.…”

“…Due to these reasons, if repeatedly replicated, such a method holds promise as a potential first-line option for those who develop this complication, especially those with small to moderate sized radial arteries [11]. We attempted external compression with the TR band based upon two reports of its efficacy in the literature [8, 9]. The TR band is a transparent plate that is positioned over the pseudoaneurysm and is secured via a Velcro strap.…”

“…Radial artery pseudoaneurysm (RAp) is an extremely rare complication, and hence, many of its clinical features are unknown, and treatment is not systematic. [ 1 ] In the few reported cases of RAp, surgical repair was the most commonly used treatment, although recently there have been reports of successful nonsurgical treatment in patients. [ 2 ] We report a case of 70-year-old female who had large radial pseudoaneurysm which was managed conservatively with the ultrasound-guided compression.…”
