Radarsat-2 Backscattering for the Modeling of Biophysical Parameters of Regenerating Mangrove Forests

Abstract: Abstract:The aim of this study is to understand the relationship between radar backscattering (σ˝, β˝and γ) of a multi-polarized Radarsat-2 C-band image with the structural attributes of regenerating mangrove vegetation located at the mouth of the Amazon River. CBH (circumference at breast height), height and species data were collected to characterize vegetation structure and above-ground biomass (AGB) at 17 plots with a total of 3090 measured individuals. Significant relationships between the linear σ˝in VH … Show more

“…Satellite remote-sensing, as an important data source, has been widely used to estimate plant AGB at the landscape scale. There are two main kinds satellite remote-sensing data used to estimate AGB, namely optical imagery [14-16] and synthetic aperture radar data [17][18][19], providing different spatial resolutions, such as SPOT (20 m) and MODIS (1 km), and Sentinel 1A (10 m) and ALOS-2 PALSAR2 (6 m). However, crop monitoring applications at the farm scale are highly demanding with respect to temporal frequency (1-3 days revisit), while spatial resolution requirements are driven by the minimum management unit that can be in the range of 1-10 m [20,21].…”

“…In mangroves specifically, canopy height, D 130, and above‐ground biomass were predicted using remote sensing, which could represent great opportunities to estimate biomass in a non‐destructive way (Fatoyinbo and Simard , Cougo et al. ).…”

“…Florestas de mangue em regiões equatoriais apresentam elevada produtividade, decorrente principalmente das condições meteorológicas, como altas taxas de precipitação pluviométrica, radiação solar e tempe-ratura. A produção de serapilheira destaca-se como importante componente dessa produtividade do manguezal (KAMRUZZAMAN et al, 2019;RIBEIRO et al, 2019;COUGO et al, 2015).…”
