Racial Discrimination and Resting-State Functional Connectivity of Salience Network Nodes in Trauma-Exposed Black Adults in the United States

Abstract: Key Points Question Are experiences of racial discrimination associated with altered resting-state connectivity patterns of salience network nodes? Findings In this cross-sectional study of 102 Black adults, more experiences of racial discrimination were associated with altered connectivity of the amygdala and anterior insula, even after adjusting for annual household income, lifetime trauma exposure, and current posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. … Show more

“…As expected, there were significant ethnoracial differences in neighborhood disadvantage. Future work should continue to investigate how structural inequities are associated with threat processing and consider interactions between other racism-related stressors (eg, racial discrimination), which have been shown to be associated with changes in the insula and ACC . Together, our findings suggest that exposure to neighborhood disadvantage may be associated with increased neural readiness to respond to threat via modification of ACC and insula reactivity.…”

“…Participants were drawn from a larger longitudinal study examining risk and resilience markers for the development of PTSD after injury (Bird et al., 2021; Webb et al., 2021, 2022; Weis, et al., 2021; Weis, Huggins, et al., 2021; Weis, Webb, et al., 2022). Participants for the larger study were recruited from a Level 1 trauma center in a city in the midwestern United States following treatment and discharge from the emergency department (ED) after experiencing a traumatic injury.…”

“…Mounting evidence shows the effects of lived experiences on psychological processes ( Torres et al, 2011 ; Berger and Sarnyai, 2015 ; Harnett et al, 2019 ; Mekawi et al, 2020 ; Bird et al, 2021 ; Fani et al, 2021 , 2022 ; Webb et al, 2022b ). As such, methodological tools can both be subject to bias against certain phenotypes shared by marginalized races and capture individual differences resulting from experiences that may co-vary with those phenotypes.…”
