Racial Differences in the Cause-Specific Prevalence of Blindness in East Baltimore

Abstract: The pattern of blindness in urban Baltimore appears to be different among blacks and whites. Whites are far more likely to have age-related macular degeneration, and blacks to have primary open-angle glaucoma. The high rate of unoperated cataracts among younger blacks and among elderly subjects of both races suggests that health services are underused. Half of all blindness in this urban population is probably preventable or reversible.

“…2 At least one-third of all cases may have a genetic basis, 3 either as part of a multisystem disease or, more frequently, as a nonsyndromic Mendelian trait. 4 All three classical forms of Mendelian inheritance have been reported, with the majority of cases exhibiting autosomal dominant transmission.…”

“…Blacks are more likely to have glaucoma than Whites; the disease is one of the leading causes of blindness in this group. 4,5 Given the significant individual and economic consequences of glaucoma, prevention strategies are essential if we hope to decrease the burden of this eye condition.…”
