Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Use of Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Adults With Chronic Medical Conditions: BRFSS 2012–2020

Abstract

What is already known on this topic? People with chronic medical conditions and people with colorectal cancer (CRC) may share common risk factors, and disparities exist in CRC screening rates, particularly among Hispanic people with limited English proficiency.What is added by this report?We found disparities in rates of CRC screening among adults with chronic medical conditions: Hispanic adults with limited English proficiency had lower rates than non-Hispanic White adults, regardless of the number of chronic medical conditions. What are the implications for public health practice? Tailored interventions are warranted to improve CRC screening rates, especially among Hispanic people with language barriers. Addressing health care access, language barriers, and cultural sensitivity are essential to reduce disparities and promote timely CRC screening.
