Race and global patterns of phenotypic variation

Abstract: Phenotypic traits have been used for centuries for the purpose of racial classification. Developments in quantitative population genetics have allowed global comparison of patterns of phenotypic variation with patterns of variation in classical genetic markers and DNA markers. Human skin color shows a high degree of variation among geographic regions, typical of traits that show extensive natural selection. Even given this high level of geographic differentiation, skin color variation is clinal and is not well… Show more

“…The communities where the children were sampled from were selected based on three criteria: Relethford's geographical cluster axiom [26] which was developed from work by Cavelli-Sforza [27] and Lieberman and Kirk [28]; communities most affected from crime that involved children; and compliance of oral and dental hospitals.…”

“…Relethford's [26] axiom dictates that geographical clusters express the correlation between genetics and geography and that the geographical distances between clusters should exceed the geographical distance within a cluster. In practical terms, oral and dental hospitals within the Western Cape and Gauteng provinces were identified to participate in the project as the geographical distance between these two provinces is 1200 km.…”

“…South Africa provides a testament to how geographical and social factors can influence population variation. The wide range of morphological variation among groups in South Africa is the cumulative result of varying geographic origins, unique population histories and structure, positive assortative mating and social and/or political barriers [4][5][6][7].…”

“…Social race is a concept of identification based on cultural, historical or familial affiliation and has no biological reality [1][2][3][4]. However, morphological differences are recognized among groups because positive assortative mating, geographical distances, and social forces act as barriers for gene flow, thus limiting group interaction and increasing the variation between groups [5][6][7]. In turn, forensic anthropologists quantify morphology to estimate ancestry, or social race, which provides practical information that is useful in a medico-legal setting [2,5].…”
