This study analyzed racial inequalities in health in 18,684 elderly Brazilians 65 years or older, interviewed in the National Household Sample Survey in 2008 (PNAD 2008), and who reported their color/race as white, brown, or black. Associations were estimated between self-rated health status, functional incapacity, and number of chronic conditions according to crude and adjusted regression analyses (α = 0.01). The majority of the elderly were white (56.2%). In the adjusted analysis, brown color/races was associated with worse self-rated health status (OR = 1.11; 95%CI: 1.03-1.18) and black color/race was associated with more chronic diseases (PR = 1.07; 95%CI: 1.02-1.13). Brown color/race appeared as a protective factor against functional incapacity. When brown and black elderly were combined in one category (“black”), “black” elderly continued to show worse self-rated health status (OR = 1.09; 95%CI: 1.02-1.16) and lower odds of functional incapacity (OR = 0.83; 95%CI: 0.76-0.92). “Black” color/race lost the association with number of chronic diseases. Color/race explained part of the health inequalities in elderly Brazilians, but other socioeconomic variables had a more striking effect.

PERCEPÇÃO DO ESTADO NUTRICIONAL | 689Rev. Nutr., Campinas, 24 (5) R E S U M O ObjetivoAvaliar a prevalência e os fatores associados ao erro na percepção do estado nutricional das crianças de creches públicas e privadas de Balneário Camboriú (SC) por parte das mães ou responsáveis. MétodosEstudo transversal com a seleção de amostra em duplo estágio (n=589). A coleta de dados incluiu medidas antropométricas e questionário com variáveis infantis e maternas. Foram calculadas as razões de prevalência e intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC 95%), por meio da Regressão de Poisson, ajustada para delineamentos complexos. Resultados Foram avaliadas 493 crianças (83,7% A B S T R A C T ObjectiveThis study assessed the prevalence and factors associated with mother's or guardian's perception error of the nutritional status of children in public and private kindergartens of Balneário Camboriu, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Methods This cross-sectional study had a two stage sample (n=589). Data collection included anthropometric measurements and administration of a questionnaire with infant and maternal variables. The prevalence ratios (PR) and confidence intervals 95% (CI 95%) were calculated using the Poisson regression, adjusted for complex sampling. Results Four hundred and ninety-three children were evaluated (83.7%). Gender distribution was homogeneous.Most of the questionnaires were answered by the mothers (95.7%) who were mostly Caucasian with average education level. The prevalence of error in the classification of nutritional status was 18.9% . After adjusted analysis, overweight .1) or childhood malnutrition and non-Caucasian caregiver (RP 1.7 IC 95% 1.1-2.6) were associated with greater outcome prevalence, while caregiver aged 24 to 35 years , with higher income ) and obesity had an opposite effect. ConclusionPrevalence of error was similar to that observed in other studies, and was associated with maternal compositional variables and child's nutritional status.

Recent reviews have discussed the conceptualization of race in health studies in Brazil. This review further documents and discusses specific measurement and modeling issues with regard to race and how this can impact result interpretation. Three scientific databases were used to search the literature on race and three health outcomes. The search yielded 38 empirical studies on birth outcomes, self-rated health, and weight. Results suggest that, while there are racial patterns in the overall literature, conceptual and methodological challenges can be addressed to clarify the ways in which racial group membership is linked to health.
