Rabbits with naturally occurring cataracts referred for phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation: a preliminary study of 12 cases

Abstract: Phacoemulsification with CTR and IOL implantation offers good long-term results and can improve the quality of life of pet rabbits. Retinal detachment, lens luxation, expulsive choroidal hemorrhage, and anesthetic death are potential complications.

“…Comment s : Lens fiber degeneration is a microscopic finding that is usually correlated with ophthalmic examination findings of lens opacity. Spontaneous lens opacities can occur at different ages in rabbits and can exhibit breed or strain specificity 24 , 313 , 314 , 315 , 316 , 317 . Congenital lenticular opacities of uncertain etiology have been reported in neonates, but most spontaneous cataracts occur in adult or even aged animals 222 .…”

“…Iris inflammation occurred in both groups, coinciding with the higher frequencies of corneal opacity and aqueous flare. The appearance of signs of inflammation of the anterior segment is common after PHACO, possibly due to the manipulation of instruments, contact of the phacoemulsifier probe tip with eye structures or iris prolapse (20,27) .…”

“…The preferred treatment for cataracts is surgical extraction via phacoemulsiication (Fig 13); hypopyon and iridal granulomas may be aspirated concurrently. Recently, Sanchez and others (2018) reported good long-term results following phacoemulsiication in a group of rabbits. Medical treatment comprises topical and systemic anti-inlammatories, in addition to systemic anti-parasiticides; for example, fenbendazole 20 mg/kg once daily for 28 days (Panacur Rabbit; Intervet).…”
