La visión de que la ciencia es típicamente un proceso acumulativo y progresivo, como lo sugieren algunos historiadores de la ciencia y algunos realistas científicos, está minada tanto por la historia como por consideraciones evolutivas sobre la naturaleza de la ciencia. Los intentos de utilizar la biología evolutiva para retratar el desarrollo científico como continuo se basan en desafortunadas analogías con la evolución de la vida. Una aplicación adecuada de la biología evolutiva, en combinación con la neurociencia, derrota el caso del realismo en cuestión y conduce a la comprensión de que la ciencia no solo está abierta a la transformación radical, como lo indica la historia, sino que debería ser así. Los enfoques no evolutivos para la continuidad histórica de la ciencia, como el de Lakatos, no tienen mejor suerte. Como discutiré, la ciencia es una forma radical de conocimiento.

En este artículo se realiza un estudio de las teorías desde el realismo científico. También se desarrolla una crítica a las diferentes propuestas escépticas como el instrumentalismo, el antirrealismo y el realismo estructural. Este estudio describe la importancia del realismo científico y los desafíos que enfrenta en la postmodernidad. Se plantea que el realismo debe establecer un conjunto de reglas para seleccionar las entidades inobservables, y que los modelos que se emplean pueden llegar a describir la realidad en el marco de una ciencia madura.

The Coincidentalist Reply to the No-Miracles Argument

Proponents of the no-miracles argument contend that scientific realism is "the only philosophy that doesn't make the success of science a miracle." Bas van Fraassen argued, however, that the success of our best theories can be explained in Darwinian termsby the fact they are survivors of a winnowing process in which unsuccessful theories are rejected. Critics of this selectionist explanation complain that while it may account for the fact we have chosen successful theories, it does not explain why any particular one of those theories succeeds.Against this I defend the claim that if selectionists manage to account for the former, they have no burden to account for the latter; the success of any particular one of our best theories might as well be an extraordinary coincidence. I refer to this enhanced selectionist reply as "coincidentalism" and argue that it is a serious but underappreciated response to the no-miracles argument. More generally, I argue the considerations raised in favor of this response show that versions of the no-miracles argument focusing on the success of particular theories are misguided.
