In this work, geopolymer synthesized with perlite and an alkaline activator medium was evaluated as a new adsorbent and photocatalyst for degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous medium. The functional group, the structure, and the morphology of the raw and the synthesized materials were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, and SEM analysis. The degradation of MB in the contaminated solution was examined using the spectrophotometric technique. Several analysis methods revealed the formation of the aluminosilicate gel after the geopolymerization reaction. The kinetics data with UV and without UV irradiations were well fitted with the pseudo-second-order equation. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of cationic dye by perlite-based geopolymer without and with UV was up to 88.94% and 97.87% in 4 hours, respectively. The degradation efficiencies of methylene blue are in the following order: perlite-based geopolymer under UV irradiations is greater than perlite-based geopolymer without UV irradiations that is larger than UV irradiations. The overall experimental results suggested that the new elaborated material with synergetic adsorption and photocatalytic activities has a great potential for the treatment of water contaminated by hazardous substances.

Adsorption of methylene blue and malachite green dyes from aqueous solution by neem leaves was studied using experimental and computational chemistry approaches. The two dyes have N-H stretch, C≡C vibration vibration, C=C stretch and C-Cl stretch as common functional groups. Batch adsorption experiments were concluded by measuring absorbance (at wavelength of maximum absorption, i.e. 660 and 630 nm for methylene blue and malachite green dyes, respectively). The adsorption of the dyes on neem leaves favoured Langmuir and Temkin isotherms and was influenced by concentration, biomass dose, pH and by contact time, and favoured chemisorption mechanism. Although surface adsorption and intra particle diffusion were identified as the rate-limiting steps, a pseudo second-order kinetics was also favoured. Quantum chemical analysis supported better adsorption of methylene blue dye on neem seed surface than malachite green dye and through Fukui function analysis, the site for adsorption of the dyes was proposed.ARTICLE HISTORY

The aim objectives of present study were to prepare a bioadsorbent from the seeds of Cucumeropsis mannii Naudin (BCM) and to examine its effectiveness in the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution by adsorption process. The process of adsorption of MB onto BCM was optimizing by varying different parameters such as contact time, initial dye concentration, and temperature. The kinetic of adsorption was analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The experimental equilibrium data were examined using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Thermodynamics parameters were also determined. The results show that the maximum adsorption percentage is 89% and the maximum adsorption capacity is 47 mg g -1 at 308 K. Isotherms studied showed that Freundlich model is the best model to describe adsorption of BCM onto MB. Kinetic studies show that the adsorption process follows pseudo second-orderkinetic model. The thermodynamic study indicated a negative value of ΔH° (-41 kJ mol -1 ) and shows that adsorption of MB on BCM is exothermic and essentially a chemical process. BCM is a potential bioadsorbent for the removal of MB from aqueous solution and can therefore be used for water purification process.
