Construction of the ITER magnet systems has been started at the end of 2007 following the signature of the first procurement arrangements (PA) for the toroidal field (TF) conductors. Six ITER members are involved in the share of the ITER magnet components and, to date, eighteen PA between the ITER Organization and six domestic agencies have been signed. Substantial progress towards full-scale construction has been achieved with the placement of the first large manufacturing contracts, the production of several tens of tons of advanced Nb 3 Sn and NbTi strand, and the setup of large cabling and jacketing facilities. The detailed design of the coils and support structures has also been finalized. The qualification of the fabrication processes for the TF coils and poloidal field (PF) coils has been initiated. The detailed design of the central solenoid (CS) coils is being developed. The design of the correction coils (CCs) with their support structures has been finalized, as well as for the TF gravity supports and clamps of the PF coils. The manufacture of prototypes of the feeder lines and current leads has been started, while ITER is in charge of the procurement of the required magnet instrumentation. This paper provides a progress report on the ITER magnet construction as per December 2010.

Optimization design of scraper angle based on orthogonal test

Abstract. The scraper angle of milling machine has a direct effect on the milling efficiency. This research establishes the finite element model of scraper, and designs the cutting front angle and the cutting back angle as factor, impact force and the average force for orthogonal test of evaluation indexes. Through simulation analysis, the force is obtained at the different level. At the same time, the simulation results are verified by experiments. The results show that the simulation results of contact force in the X direction are close to the measured results, and prove the accuracy of the simulation results. The optimized scraper is that the cutting angle is 5.5°, and the cutting back angle is 9°. The impact force is minimum, and the resultant of average force and impact force is minimum. The optimization of scraper angle can effectively reduce the impact force and the average force, which provides guidance for the improvement of scraper.

Abstract. High field superconducting magnets need strong non-superconducting components for structural reinforcement. For instance, the ITER magnet system (MS) consists of cable-in-conduit conductor, coil case, magnet support, and insulating materials. Investigation of mechanical properties at magnet operation temperature with specimens machined at the final manufacturing stages of the conductor jacket materials, magnet support material, and insulating materials, even the component of the full-size conductor jacket is necessary to establish sound databases for the products. In China, almost all mechanical property tests of structural materials for the ITER MS, including conductor jacket materials of TF coils, PF coils, CCs, case material of CCs, conductor jacket materials of Main Busbars (MB) and Corrector Busbars (CB), material of magnet supports, and insulating materials of CCs have been carried out at the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (TIPC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). In this paper, the mechanical property test facilities are briefly demonstrated and the mechanical tests on the structural materials for the ITER MS, highlighting test rigs as well as test methods, are presented.
