R&D Cooperation and Knowledge Spillover Effects for Sustainable Business Innovation in the Chemical Industry

Abstract: This paper investigates the influence of research and development (R&D) cooperation on the creation of spillover effects for sustainable firms in the chemical industry. We explore the evidence for the origin of knowledge spillovers derived from cooperation amongst firms and universities and R&D organizations as well as to test the influence of internal/external financial support on these effects. The results confirm that when firms acquire knowledge from internal sources, this leads to increased innovation and… Show more

“…At the same time, according not only to Trigueiro et al [64] but also to Horbach [51], who indicates that technology, through R&D activities, triggers eco-innovations, the results obtained here confirm that R&D activities are significant but have a negative influence. Conversely, in the context of internal R&D activities, the previous empirical results obtained in Reference [13], also suggest that the internal acquisition of R&D activities leads to an increased innovation as well as to a sustainable performance.…”

“…The results confirmed their positive influence on eco-innovation. Also in relation to R&D activities, namely internal R&D activities, the results presented in Reference [13] confirm that, when companies acquire knowledge from internal sources, this leads to increased innovation and sustainable performance.…”

“…Agrawal found that the rooted inflow of foreign talent may crowd out existing talent, which may damage the scientific development of the region [31]. In addition, industry-university-research cooperation can also significantly improve the sustainable development and innovation capabilities of enterprises [32,33]. Summarizing the above, it can be seen that absorptive capacity affects innovation capacity by affecting knowledge spillovers.…”

“…As the chemical industry is one of the most emission-intensive sectors, R&D cooperation between chemical companies, universities and research institutes, as well as firms' participation in industrial clusters could create knowledge spillover effects and sustainable innovation activities [40]. It is also important to shape policies supporting sustainability, eco-innovation and resource efficiency in this industry [41].…”
