PurposeUsing a dynamic capabilities approach, the present study aims to identify and assess the effects of organizational determinants on capabilities underlying Industry 4.0 design principles, such as integration, virtualization, real-time, automation and servitization.Design/methodology/approachPLS-SEM enables a two-stage hierarchical latent variable reflective-formative model which was used for assessing the effect of organizational determinants on Industry 4.0 design principles. Five hundred six manufacturing companies constitute the effective sample, representing a population of manufacturing companies in an industrialized country.FindingsThe findings reveal that Industry 4.0 design principles extensively depend on digitalization resource availability. At the same time, companies that possess digitalization and change management capabilities tend to devote more resources to digitalization. Finally, the paper reveals that networking and partnership capability is the critical enabler for change management and digitalization capabilities.Practical implicationsThe paper provides empirical evidence that the successful development of Industry 4.0 design principles and their underlying integration, virtualization, real-time, automation and servitization capabilities are resource dependent, requiring significant upfront investment and continuous resource allocation. Further, the study implies that companies with networking and partnership, change management and digitalization capabilities tend to allocate more resources for Industry 4.0 transformation.Originality/valueExclusively focusing on empirical research that reported applied insights into determinants of Industry 4.0 design principles, the study offers unique implications for promoting Industry 4.0 digital transformation among manufacturing companies.

PurposeThe Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) holds the potential to significantly improve capabilities and performances for architectural, engineering, construction and operation and maintenance (AECO) companies in India. The top management of such companies seems unsure and reluctant to implementation of the 4IR applications. The objective of this research is to identify the 4IR technology applications, which would have a significant impact on the operation of the AECO companies in India. Moreover, the paper further attempts to give a conceptual roadmap for the implementation of these 4IR technologies in the AECO value chain.Design/methodology/approachThe nascent level of research in 4IR in construction necessitated the adoption of mixed methodologies in research. Hypothesis testing has been carried out on the quantitative data to ascertain the potential of 4IR technologies, which could significantly impact the AECO companies. Subsequently, qualitative research has been used to explore the reasons impacting the technology adoption and generate a possible road map for the implementation of the significant 4IR technology applications.FindingsThe AECO value chain is challenged due to its complexity, uncertainty, fragmented supply chains, myopic thinking and a culture reluctant to change. The study provides insights into the dilemmas of practitioners in the Indian context while exploring possible approaches to carry out the transformation in AECO.Research limitations/implicationsThe study validation relied on the opinions, perspectives and recollections of respondents. The opinion of practicing professionals was limited to the Indian context.Originality/valueThe article may help leaders of AECO firms, industry associations, policymakers and academia to take steps in relevant directions to enable digital transformation.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar cuáles son algunas de las estrategias seguidas por el corporativo Siemens para ampliar tanto sus capacidades de aprendizaje como las ligadas a la innovación digital. Es un estudio de caso que documenta el por qué este corporativo es considerado como uno de los líderes tecnológicos en el contexto de la Industria 4.0. Con base en el resultado de la investigación se encuentra que esta empresa internacional, como parte de su estrategia, descentralizó muchas plantas ligadas a sus líneas de negocio fuera de Alemania y también llevó a cabo múltiples acuerdos de colaboración y join ventures. De igual forma, capacita de manera continua a su personal, establece nexos con instituciones educativas e impulsa internamente una cultura corporativa que facilita el aprendizaje laboral, la flexibilidad y su adaptación a los cambios del contexto.
