Quorum sensing-mediated inter-specific conidial anastomosis tube fusion between Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum siamense.

Abstract: Many plant pathogenic filamentous fungi undergo fusion of conidia through conidial anastomosis tubes (CATs), which is believed to facilitate horizontal gene transfer between species. We discovered a remarkable inter-specific conidial anastomosis tube (CAT) fusion between two important plant fungal pathogens Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum siamense. In an In vitro assay, under no selection pressure, the inter-specific CAT fusion was preferred with higher frequency (25%) than intra-specific CAT… Show more

“…Parasexuality could also be critical for interspecific hybridization (Steensels et al ., 2021) and horizontal gene transfer (Fitzpatrick, 2012; Soanes & Richards, 2014), which may have significant evolutionary roles. This is supported by our evidence of interspecific interactions between V. dahliae and V. nonalfalfae , similarly to those recently reported between Colletotrichum species (Mehta & Baghela, 2021), and the amphidiploid nature of the related hybrid species V. longisporum , presumed to have arisen parasexually between V. dahliae and other species (Karapapa et al ., 1997; Inderbitzin et al ., 2011).…”
