Quorum Sensing Activity of Serratia fonticola Strain RB-25 Isolated from an Ex-landfill Site

Abstract: Quorum sensing is a unique bacterial communication system which permits bacteria to synchronize their behaviour in accordance with the population density. The operation of this communication network involves the use of diffusible autoinducer molecules, termed N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs). Serratia spp. are well known for their use of quorum sensing to regulate the expression of various genes. In this study, we aimed to characterized the AHL production of a bacterium designated as strain RB-25 isolated from… Show more

“…The further processing of intracellular AI-2-P is then required by LsrF and LsrG proteins [32, 33]. At present, increasingly more AI-2-mediated systems are continuously discovered and explored in Serratia, which is also taxonomically classified as Enterobacteriaceae [3436]. Nevertheless, the genetic characteristics and molecular mechanisms about the AI-2 systems of Serratia sp.…”

“…AHLs-producing bacteria were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. Bacterial DNA was extracted and purified using a bacterial genomic DNA extraction kit (Tiangen Biotech, Beijing) as described (Ee et al, 2014). The 16S rRNA gene was amplified from the resulting DNA using universal primers B8F (5′-AGAGTTTGATCCTGGCTCAG-3′) and B1510 (5′-GGTTACCTTGTTACGATT-3′) through a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique under standard conditions (Chan et al, 2011).…”

“…Serratia odorifera HZSO-1 can also secrete N-acyl homoserine lactones to the external environment as signaling molecules under the regulation of the quorum-sensing system when it perceives a critical cell density [31]. The signaling molecule is a kind of hormone that plays a signi cant role in the interaction between bacteria and plants [32,33]. Therefore, it is worth studying whether Serratia bacteria can accelerate the decomposition of matrix substrates and the formation of primordia through quorum sensing after hyphal maturation.…”
