Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) Bran Saponins Alleviate Hyperuricemia and Inhibit Renal Injury by Regulating the PI3K/AKT/NFκB Signaling Pathway and Uric Acid Transport

Abstract: Triterpenoids derived from natural products can exert antihyperuricemic effects. Here, we investigated the antihyperuricemic activity and mechanism of quinoa bran saponins (QBSs) in hyperuricemic mouse and cell models. The QBS4 fraction, with the highest saponin content, was used. Fourier-transform infrared, high-performance liquid chromatography, and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography−mass spectrometry identified 11 individual saponins in QBS4, of which the main components were hederagenin and oleano… Show more

“…This led to the inhibition of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway's activation triggered by MSU, ultimately providing relief from gout symptoms (Meng et al, 2021). Furthermore, isovitexin (Sun et al, 2021), β-caryophyllene (Li et al, 2021b), cichoric acid (Wang et al, 2021b), resveratrol (Li et al, 2019b), carvacrol (Riaz et al, 2022) and bran saponins (Lin et al, 2023) can offer a safeguarding impact against gout by suppressing the NF-κB signaling pathway. Several TCM formulations have been observed to decelerate the progression of gout.…”

“…Natural foods and their bioactive compounds have been explored for hyperuricemia treatment, with botanical functional ingredients showing promise in addressing the complex pathogenesis of hyperuricemia [ 24 , 28 , 29 ]. Phytochemicals like resveratrol, plant saponins, and various plant extracts have demonstrated potential in clinical hyperuricemia treatment [ 1 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. These plant ingredients can reduce blood UA levels by modulating enzyme activity, oxidative stress, and proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and signaling pathways [ 34 , 35 ].…”

“…Guluronic oligosaccharides alleviate HUA through multiple mechanisms, including restoring normal expression levels of XO and adenosine deaminase (ADA), regulating UA transporter expression at the mRNA level, and altering gut microbiota composition [12]. Quinoa bran saponins inhibit XO and ADA activities and also regulate UA transporter expression at the mRNA level to alleviate HUA [13]. In addition, protein hydrolysates from food sources have also received extensive attention in recent years, exhibiting a variety of biological effects and providing a new way to treat HUA.…”
