The 2300 years B.P. eruption of the Yakedake volcano in central Japan consisted primarily of lava extrusion and dome growth in the summit area, and a repetitive gravitational collapse of the dome produced a series of block and ash flows known as the Nakao pyroclastic flow deposit (NPFD). Based on the geochemistry and mineralogy, the juvenile materials in the NPFD can be assigned to five groups: light colored, porphyritic dacite (white dacite) showing little or no petrographic evidence of magma mixing, dark colored hybrid andesite (black andesite) with disequilibrium phenocryst assemblages and textures, banded lava with streaks of white dacite and hybrid andesite, basaltic andesitic enclaves (hybrid enclave) having the same disequilibrium phenocryst assemblage as the hybrid andesite, and basaltic enclave (primitive enclave) lacking any evidence of magma mixing. Compositional data from the phenocrysts and whole rocks demonstrate that the juvenile materials of the NPFD preserve a magma mixing/mingling event between a basaltic magma (49.5 wt% SiO 2 , T ∼ 1075 °C from olivine melt geothermometry), which is compositionally similar to the primitive enclave, and a dacitic magma (64.6 wt% SiO 2 , T = 790 800 °C from Fe Ti oxide geothermometry), which is compositionally similar to the white dacite. The NPFD eruption was caused by an invasion of the basaltic magma into the preexisting, highly crystalline dacitic magma chamber. The composition of the dacitic magma remained constant throughout the eruption. However, heating by the basalt magma increased its temperature locally up to T ∼ 950 °C. Minor disruption and consecutive quenching of the replenishing basaltic magma may have formed the primitive enclave. Simultaneously, the replenishing basaltic magma entrained small amounts of the dacitic magma, producing a hybrid basaltic andesitic magma layer at the base of the chamber. The quenched part of the hybrid layer was preserved as the hybrid enclave. Finally, the simultaneous ascent of the dacitic magma and liquid interior of the hybrid layer through a common conduit promoted the mixing/mingling of the two magmas and caused the coeruption of diverse lava types.

The first appearance of abundant cumulus augite in the Kiglapait layered mafic body, on the coast of Labrador, defines the base of the Upper Zone at 84 PCS (percent solidified). The appearance of this phase is gradual, culminating in an impressive overproduction in the region around 90 PCS. This behavior can be rectified to yield an "errorless equivalent" cumulus arrival of augite at 81 PCS. The observed modal behavior was interpreted as evidence for a poorly stirred magma in which augite components were sequestered in the core of a convection cell. The compositional relations of augite and olivine offer some support for this hypothesis. These relations are best viewed in the context of linear partitioning in binary solutions extended to coexisting pairs of mineral species that share the same exchange reaction, here FeMg -1 . Hence, rather than a melting loop, the partitioning of Fe and Mg involves the two crystalline solutions augite and olivine. Here, the partition coefficient D is formulated as 68. This higher value of D suggests a metastable equilibrium on a narrower loop driven by an overstepping reaction. At high temperature modeled by QUILF, the same general relations hold, but all values of D are higher, and the linear array leads back to a significantly higher K D = 0.44, as would be expected for highertemperature interphase equilibria. Hence, linear partitioning can be used successfully to describe both liquidus and subsolidus interphase equilibria. With calibration, the fictive K D can be correlated with T, from liquidus equilibria at the higher limit to intracrystalline cation diffusion blocking at the lower limit.Keywords: linear partitioning, Kiglapait intrusion, subsolidus equilibria, binary solutions, augite, olivine, Labrador. [1] The role silicate-liquid immiscibility plays in the formation of macro-scale, bimodal volcanic/plutonic igneous complexes, and Fe-Ti oxide deposits is debated as the rock compositions produced by immiscibility are similar to those produced by other petrological processes. Within the flows of the North Mountain basalt of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province are centimeter-thick granophyre layers. The granophyre layers are a mixture of mafic (i.e., ilmenite, magnetite, ferroaugite, plagioclase, stilpnomelane, ferrorichterite) and felsic (i.e., sanidine, quartz) minerals and highly siliceous (>75 wt% SiO 2 ) mesostases. Petrological modeling indicates that the siliceous mesostasis 1 sanidine 1 quartz 6 ferrorichterite represents a Si-rich silicate immiscible melt whereas the ferroaugite 1 plagioclase 1 stilpnomelane represent the Fe-rich silicate immiscible liquid. The identification of naturally occurring silicate-liquid immiscibility at scales greater than micron level is an important observation which may be useful in identifying volcanic and plutonic rocks which formed by macro-scale silicate-liquid immiscibility.
