Quick and Efficient Link Quality Estimation in Wireless Sensors Networks

Abstract: In wireless sensor networks, link metric estimation at each hop should not require a long history of packet exchanges. In this paper, we explore several approaches to link quality estimation. We report on the results of experiments on the Grenoble testbed of the FIT IoT-lab composed of a set of Cortex M3 nodes with IEEE 802.15.4 radios. Whereas the received signal power is a poor indication of PDR (Packet Delivery Ratio) that one can expect on a given link, LQI (Link Quality Indicator) gives more accurate info… Show more

“…Common wireless link quality estimators a) RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator): Upon packet reception, the radio chip provides a measure of the received signal power. Like many others [1], we have recognized in a previous paper [4] that high reception power implies good reception quality. However, it is hard to discriminate between good and bad links for a lower level of the received signal power.…”

“…We have previously studied the AT86RF231 radio chip on the IoT-lab testbed [4] and obtained encouraging results on the ability of LQI to predict the link PER. In Figure 1, the precision of the PER estimation is good on channel 26 (the inter-percentile interval is thin).…”

“…However, unlike [8], we consider the optimal solution for any flow to be the one that minimizes the total number of transmissions per message of this flow, while achieving the desired end-to-end reliability. Furthermore, traces obtained from real IoT networks like [24,25] allow us to better understand the challenges of wireless networking and make realistic assumptions. That is why, in this paper, the performance evaluation is based on PDR values computed from a realistic model, as explained in Section 6.1.…”

“…NDN has been applied in different domains including Internet of Things [6], Vehicular Ad hoc Networks [7], and Wireless Sensor Network [8]. On the other hand, Link Quality Estimation (LQE) [9] is used to estimate and select the stable and reliable link over a set of candidate links that can be used to forward interest. LQE integrates different information and metrics to select the stable link.…”
