Queue-jumpers, terrorists, breeders: representations of Tamil migrants in Canadian popular media

Abstract: The 2010 arrival of the MV Sun Sea on the BC coast sparked a wave of heated antimigrant sentiment in Canadian popular media which cast the 492 Sri Lankan Tamils on board as 'illegitimate' refugee claimants. While Canada has historically seen itself as the safe haven and protector of human rights for those with 'legitimate' claims, the Sun Sea response reflects a shift in attitudes about refugees and immigration in popular discourse and Canadian public policy. This paper examines the construction of Tamil migra… Show more

“…Comments were taken from one UK based online news site. This approach has been used to examine discourse relating to a range of issues including: Barack Obama's eligibility to be president of the USA (Hughey, 2012;Hughey & Daniels, 2013), immigration in Canada (Krishnamurti, 2013) and how comments can affect the family of victims of murder (Hlavach & Freivogel, 2011), but has not previously been reported in research attempting to understand views of infant feeding. It can be argued that in using such a data source, that is comments from one online news source, it is not possible to understand who the author is, and that this reduces their authenticity according to Scott's (1990) criteria.…”

“…In Canada the LTTE worked through a number of organisations to solicit, or force, financial assistance for the insurgency (La 2004;Becker 2007), although there is some debate as to whether the efforts of some of these organisations were spontaneous and not orchestrated by the LTTE (Cheran 2007). The perception that the Tamil Diaspora in Canada is a troublesome minority obsessed by imported conflict is a staple in the media, and informed federal government policy that put the LTTE on a list of banned terrorist organisations in January 2006, placing scrutiny on all transnational activity between Canada and Sri Lanka (Krishnamurti 2013). 2 Tamil identity became fixed along lines determined by the LTTE on the one hand and Canadian security interests on the other (George 2011).…”

“…This humanitarianism is a core facet of the Canadian imperial project at home and abroad. Domestic and international actions in refugee rescue and support -such as the ideological construction of desirable refugees (Krishnamurti, 2013;Madokoro, 2016;Mountz, 2011), Canada's proud role as a peacekeeping nation (Razack, 2004;Regan, 2010), and the prominence of liberal humanitarianism as a tenet of national identity (Tascón & Ife, 2008;Wayland, 1997) -operate to secure the hegemony of both white settler society within Canada and Canada's place as a global humanitarian leader. Humanitarianism abroad remains central to national identity which veils the state's continued oppression of Indigenous peoples and precariously situated migrants at home (Chatterjee, 2018a;Hyndman, 2003;Mountz, 2004;Sharma, 2006;Zine, 2009).…”
