Questionnaire-based survey on the prevalence of medication-overuse headache in Japanese one city—Itoigawa study

Abstract: Objective The medication-overuse headache (MOH) prevalence has not been investigated in a general Japanese population. We performed questionnaire-based survey and revealed MOH prevalence and its characteristics. We also performed clustering to obtain insight for MOH subgrouping. Methods In this cross-sectional study, the 15–64-year-old population was investigated in Itoigawa during their COVID-19 vaccination under the national policy. MOH was defined as ≥ 15 days/month … Show more

“…The true mechanism is uncertain, but the vaccine’s coagulopathy seemed hypothesized. Apart from TGA, some population-based surveys at the COVID-19 vaccination venues have been also reported [ 10 , 11 ], so further research on the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccination like this and their follow-up should be reported.…”

“…About 5% of the normal population suffers from CDH [ 1 ]. The treatment for CDH is difficult because (1) acute medications are ineffective in 25% of patients, which can cause a transformation from episodic to chronic headache [ 2 ], medication-overuse headache (MOH) [ 3 , 4 ], and other side effects [ 5 ], and (2) prophylactic medications are ineffective in about 50% of patients and have side effects, leading to poor patient adherence, with more than half of the patients stopping treatment within two months [ 6 ]. In this context, alternative acute and prophylactic medications for CDH are needed.…”
