Questioning the validity and reliability of using a video-based test to assess decision making among female and male water polo players

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of a water polo video-based test to assess decision making. Ninety-five female and male elite/tier 4 (T4) or highly trained/tier 3 (T3) athletes participated using their smartphones. Males repeated the test one week later for reliability analyses. Coaches assessed males’ in-water decision making and females were noted as selected or nonselected for the national team. Although response accuracy was significantly different between T3 and T4 athletes ( p &… Show more

“…Players’ individual skills, such as ball technique, accuracy when passing the ball while under pressure from the opponent and shooting accuracy, are crucial to successfully completing a ball possession phase [ 19 ]. These technical skills are also connected to players’ individual tactical knowledge, which reflects their ability to read the play situations [ 20 ] and make decisions in the most efficient and accurate manner possible.…”

“…Although this occlusion paradigm has been successful in distinguishing expert athletes from novices ( Mann et al, 2007 ), certain limitations have been identified in its ability to differentiate or enhance perceptual-cognitive skills among athletes with more similar levels of expertise. For example, Dong et al (2023) expressed concerns regarding the validity and reliability of a video-based test employed to assess decision making in water polo, highlighting the nonrepresentative nature of the paradigm, which lacks adequate action correspondence (such as perception-action coupling) to the natural task.…”
