The nurse prescribing course is a set programme of academic study at gradute level, the aim of which is to prepare nurses for their new prescribing roles. The course identifies core theoretical principles in applied pharmacology and therapeutics, medicines management and evidence-based practice that must be taught in order to provide students with a scientific foundation for competent prescribing. This paper reinforces the principles of this foundation along with teaching and learning strategies that can be used to help students articulate the principles of applied pharmacology and therapeutics, and also to develop critical thinking skills which are necessary for pharmacologic reasoning.
