Quest for the dynamics ofνμντconversion

Abstract: We perform a quantitative analysis of the capability of K2K, MINOS, OPERA and a neutrino factory in a muon collider to discriminate the standard mass induced vacuum oscillation from the pure decoherence solution to the atmospheric neutrino problem and thereby contribute to unravel the dynamics that governs the observed ν µ disappearance.

“…After the first convincing evidence for atmospheric neutrino oscillations [15], a quantitative analysis was performed in [11], considering possible decoherence effects in the ν µ → ν µ channel (see also [12]). The phenomenology of terrestrial neutrino experiments has also been investigated in [13,14]. More recently, prospective studies have focused on decoherence effects in high energy neutrinos [16,17,18,19,20], observable in next generation neutrino telescopes.…”

“…However, lacking an "ab initio" theory of quantum gravity decoherence, its effects can only be parameterized in a model-dependent (and somewhat arbitrary) way. Searches with neutral kaon oscillations [3,4,5,6], neutron interferometry [3,7] and, more recently, neutrino oscillations [8,9,10,11,12,13,14], have found no evidence for such effects so far, and have placed bounds on model parameters.…”

“…A linear decoherence simplified model, of Lindblad type [10] has been used for the fit, following earlier work in [30]. The model of [30] involved a diagonal decoherence matrix, and in the fit of [21] decoherence was assumed to be dominant only in the antineutrino sector, in order to fit the LSND results [31] pointing towards significant e !…”
