The growing availability of data in digital media has contributed to the creation of a large number of data ecosystems. However, having successful Data Ecosystem is still a challenge. In order to prevent the failure of a Data Ecosystem and ensure its survival, evaluating its health becomes fundamental. In a general way, the health of a Data Ecosystem can be defined as its ability to grow and survive over time. Indicators such as productivity, robustness, niche creation and sustainability can be employed to evaluate the health of a Data Ecosystem. In this paper, we propose a framework for data Ecosystem health evaluation composed of a set of indicators and metrics, which assess the Data Ecosystem’s current state and its ability to stay healthy over time. The results obtained when using the proposed framework offers evidence to assist in decision making on how data has being published and consumed in a Data Ecosystem, as well as to evaluate which ecosystems are more prosperous or need more investments.

With the development of open source community, the software ecosystem has become a popular perspective in the research on software development process and environment. Software productivity is an important evaluation indicator of the software ecosystem health. A successful software ecosystem relies on long-term and stable production activities by the users, which ensures that the software ecosystem can continuously provide the value needed by users. Therefore, the measurement of software ecosystem productivity can help maintain the user development efficiency and the stability of the software ecosystem. However, there is still little literature on the productivity of open source software ecosystems. By analogy with the natural ecosystem, this paper gives the relevant definitions of software ecosystem productivity and analyzes the factors affecting the productivity of software ecosystem. Based on the factors of the ecosystem productivity and their interrelationships, this paper establishes a software ecosystem productivity model and takes the GitHub platform as an example for detailed analysis and explanation. The results show that the model can better explain the factors affecting the productivity of software ecosystems. It is helpful for the research on the measurement of the software ecosystem health and the software development efficiency.

RESUMOEste artigo discute a importância da avaliação de qualidade em ecossistemas de software, em especial no domínio educacional. São apresentados alguns indicadores de saúde de ecossistemas, utilizando como foco o BROAD-ECOS, um Ecossistema de e-Learning baseado em serviços educacionais, reuso e compartilhamento de recursos em um contexto interorganizacional. Foram definidas métricas para avaliação da saúde do ecossistema e, a partir da arquitetura semiautomatizada HEAL ME foi avaliada a qualidade do ecossistema, com quatro indicadores. Há indícios da viabilidade do processo de avaliação, e suas análises e resultados poderão ser utilizados para aperfeiçoamento do ecossistema, sua sobrevivência e adoção em larga escala. ABSTRACTThis article discusses the importance of quality assessment in software ecosystems, especially in the educational domain. Some ecosystem health indicators are presented, focusing on BROAD-ECOS, an e-Learning Ecosystem based on educational services, resources reuse and sharing in an inter-organizational context. Metrics were defined for evaluation of ecosystem health, and from the semi-automated HEAL ME architecture the ecosystem quality was evaluated, with four indicators. There are indications of the feasibility of the evaluation process, and its analyzis and results can be used to improve the ecosystem, to survive and to adopt it on a large scale.
