Quercus ilex Phyllosphere Microbiome Environmental-Driven Structure and Composition Shifts in a Mediterranean Contex

Abstract: The intra- and interdomain phyllosphere microbiome features of Quercus ilex L. in a Mediterranean context is reported. We hypothesized that the main driver of the phyllosphere microbiome might be the season and that atmospheric pollutants might have a co-effect. Hence, we investigated the composition of epiphytic bacteria and fungi of leaves sampled in urban and natural areas (in Southern Italy) in summer and winter, using microscopy and metagenomic analysis. To assess possible co-effects on the composition of… Show more

“…The variation in leaf characteristics and environmental factors between young and old leaves, along with the influence of host plant species, play crucial roles in shaping leaf-associated communities and account for the observed differences (S ̌igutovaé t al., 2023). Overall, our study provides confirmation of significant seasonal fluctuations in the composition of phyllosphere epiphytic bacteria and fungi (Jumpponen and Jones, 2010;Gomes et al, 2018;Postiglione et al, 2022).…”

“…Notably, the multi-functionality of phyllosphere microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, showed no notable correlation with climatic conditions ( Wei et al, 2022 ). The findings underscore the complex interplay of environmental factors, plant morphology, and microbial diversity, emphasizing their profound implications for the stability and functionality of phyllosphere microorganism communities ( Stapleton and Simmons, 2006 ; Postiglione et al, 2022 ).…”

“…For each of the ten samples, 4000 FASTQ reads were obtained; sequence data were deposited in the NCBI under BioProject PRJNA1095819 (biosamples SAMN40733751–SAMN40733760). The sequences were imported into GAIA metagenomics cloud-based software (v2.02, Sequentia Biotech, Barcelona, Spain) [ 28 , 29 ] for subsequent bioinformatics analyses.…”
